Temperature Restrictions when Flying with Pets
Some airlines impose temperature restrictions to avoid animals being exposed to extreme heat (or cold) in the animal terminal facilities, holding areas, in transit between the terminal and the aircraft or on an aircraft awaiting departure.
These restrictions generally only apply for pets in cargo, not to those traveling with you in the cabin.
As a rule, airlines will not accept animals when temperatures at the arrival or departure airport are forecast to be above 29C (84F) or below 7C (45F). Bear in mind that for snub-nosed dogs and cats the top temperature limit is 21-24C (70-75F).
Summer Heat Embargo
During the summer months, usually from May to September, airlines often suspend live animal shipment in the cargo department. Some take a more flexible approach, taking into consideration actual temperatures at the time of the flights whilst others will not be compliant during these months.
Here are a few ways you may be able to get around these restrictions:
- Check different airlines as policies vary from one to another.
- Negotiate with your airline on possible exceptions to the embargo.
- Choose flights departing and arriving either after dark or early in the morning, before the runway heats up.
- Consider departing or arriving from a different city where temperatures are milder.
Cold Restriction
Unless you have a veterinarian certificate of low temperature acclimation, restrictions also apply when temperatures fall below 7C (45F) at locations on the itinerary.
However, if temperatures drop below -6.6C (20F) and regardless of the certificate, pets will not be accepted in cargo.
This certificate must include:
- name/address of the passenger
- name of the animal
- name/signature of licensed veterinarian
- veterinarian’s accreditation date/number
- temperature to which the animal is acclimated
