Kazakhstan: Curiosity – No Work Permit for Russian and Belorussian Nationals

Kazakh immigration procedure is simplified based on multilateral agreement with Russia and Belarus

KazakhstanKazakhstan is infamous for its long immigration process which may last up to four months for certain foreigners. Effective January 2012, however, Russian and Belorussian nationals are exempt from numerous requirements and enjoy a shortened immigration process for employment in Kazakhstan.

Based on an agreement ratified between Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, nationals of each country are allowed to work on the territory of the other country without obtaining a work permit.

According to the new rules, in order for Russian and Belorussian nationals to be employed legally in Kazakhstan a valid work contract is sufficient, however it must meet specific requirements set forth by the labor office. Furthermore for a legal stay in the country, an address registration must also be arranged based on the approved work contract, as well as a lease agreement and an HIV certificate. The process can be completed within one week in case all the required application and documents are available, however, Kazakh authorities are yet to standardize the procedure, therefore processing times still vary depending on place of registration.

As the agreement is multilateral, Kazakh nationals are also enjoying simplified immigration requirements in Russia and Belarus.
