Qatar: Curiosity – Qatar Looks to Macedonia for Manpower

Employers may hire workers via Macedonian recruitment agencies

Following the ratification of an agreement between Macedonia and Qatar, recruitment agencies based in Macedonia can hire Macedonian workers to fill a growing need for domestic help in Qatar. Job openings are mainly for the positions of maids, cooks and drivers.

Once the selection is made by a recruitment agency, the Macedonian government is responsible for conducting medical checks and obtaining travel permits for the workers, while the government of Qatar is responsible for ensuring that the Qatari employers arrange their travel and accommodation as well as obtain the necessary residence authorizations on the employee’s behalf.

By law, a work contract must be in place in Arabic and English, clearly stating the terms and conditions of the employment and ensuring the rights of the foreigner. The contract must be ratified by Macedonian and Qatari authorities alike.

In expectation of the influx of Macedonian workers, and to further strengthen cooperation between the two countries, a Macedonian embassy has recently opened in the city of Doha.

The two governments have also established a joint committee for the implementation and interpretation of the agreement, to propose modifications if needed and to review job opportunities.

Qatar has similar agreements on the way with Armenia, Bosnia, Cambodia, Kenya, Morocco, Sudan, Tanzania and Vietnam, encouraging the recruitment of domestic workers from these countries.
