UAE: Curiosity – Work Ban for Female Employees on Family Sponsorship

Ban may be imposed on spouse by employer

The Ministry of Labour has confirmed that a six-month work ban is applicable for female employees under the sponsorship of their husbands or fathers, if they change jobs without completing two years of employment with their employer.

Previously, officials stated that female employees, who take up employment while remaining under the sponsorship of their male relative, are not affected by a work ban. This information has now been refuted, and according to the ministry, in cases where a wife or daughter decides to change jobs without completing two years of employment, she will be automatically banned by the Ministry of Labour for six months.‎

The work ban can be lifted under certain conditions, however regulations are interpreted differently by various Emirates and zones. Applicable rules should always be confirmed with the decision-making authority specific to a case.
