Importance of Law Compliance Abroad
As we know, doing business on a global scale or in developing markets offers a great deal of challenges. Residency laws are often either ill defined, vague or poorly disseminated and this leaves expats open to this type of extortion or worse caught up as political collateral damage.
A Libyan appeals court, for example, has sentenced a Swiss businessman to months in prison for violating residency laws. Often, it is not a case of poorly defined rules, but rather a question of how these rules are applied, depending on political and social moods.
In many countries, Move One has seen a recent shift towards tighter enforcement of rules. These moves can be due to either a need to top-up state coffers; a shift towards more nationalist policies or changing attitudes towards immigration and employment mobility.
As the financial crisis stumbles on in Eastern Europe, Russia, CIS and the Balkans, we strongly recommend to our customers that they remain extra diligent in managing deadlines and ensuring all staff and family members are compliant with the spirit and letter of the law. Deportation and penalties do happen and authorities do come and check companies for law compliance.
Move One Immigration produces a regular, monthly, country specific section on the blog focusing on the legal and practical issues surrounding relocations and international mobility.
