Qatar: Curiosity – Smart ID Cards Issued to 47,542 Expatriates
Many expatriates in Qatar have already taken advantage of the various smart card services
Since Qatar authorities launched smart ID cards on May 18, the Ministry of Interior has issued 47,542 ID cards to expatriates, as well as 1,000 cards with electronic chips, allowing holders to use government online e-services.
The services using smart cards can be accessed through self-service kiosks and various online platforms by citizens and expatriates alike. Kiosks can be found in commercial complexes, such as the Main Building of General Post, Landmark Complex, Villagio Mall, Royal Plaza, Visa section of the Passports and Airport Security Department or the Lulu Hypermarket – Airport Branch.
The card also enables a representative of the holder’s employer to undergo visa and residence permit application procedures in their name. It will also allow owners to obtain exit permits, which will solely be issued online. In order to obtain a residence permit, users will have to pay the fee online and collect the stickers at the service centers of the Ministry.
The fee for a normal card is QR 100 (approximately $27,50). Applicants will be able to use various electronic services for an additional payment of QR 250 (approximately $69), for a period of up to three years, depending on the validity of the residence permit. E-gate services for easy pass through Doha International Airport can be added to smart ID cards for a price of QR 100 for one year, QR 150 for two years or QR 200 for three years. The smart ID card is not mandatory for expatriates.
