Positive Signs for Iraq’s Aviation Sector
Iraq's struggling aviation sector is steadily recovering after years of decline.
The civil aviation sector in Iraq is gradually making a recovery after decades of neglect and dilapidation. For several years, the industry faced a plethora of problems because of a lack of infrastructure. In the early 90’s, commercial planes were grounded due to security problems, poor safety record and UN imposed ”no fly zone” restrictions following Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait.
However, the industry has shown signs of recovery over the years as airlines jostle to tap into this burgeoning market. Almost two years ago, there were only six commercial airlines operating in Iraq. Currently, there are about 26, including western carriers like Lufthansa. Other airlines like Air Berlin, Qatar Airways, Emirates and Flydubai have also commenced flights to various destinations in the region.
The influx of airlines in Iraq is welcome news for air travelers, including foreign investors and multinational companies operating in the region. According to Robert Hass, Middle East Regional Manager at Move One Logistics, “these recent developments are likely to promote a healthy competition between airlines in the industry, driving down costs for passengers and freight forwarders.” Like most multinational companies, Move One admits that they’ve had difficulties flying their personnel in and out of Iraq in the past due to a whole range of problems but this has all changed now. “Unlike before, more airlines are flying in and out of several destinations in Iraq, improving accessibility to various parts of the country,” adds Hass.
Despite these positive signs, it has been a bittersweet recovery for the industry. The latest attempt to revive Iraqi Airways, the country’s national flag carrier has been hampered by a lawsuit from Kuwaiti Air, which is claiming damages to the tune of $1 billion for the alleged theft of ten jetliners during the first Gulf War. This has forced the Iraqi government to declare its national carrier bankrupt and begin liquidation proceedings in order to avoid legal action.
