Expat Looking for a Job

Tips for expat job search

It is not unusual that many expats are actually unemployed and looking for work. It is not always the case that people have a job in their new countries before moving.  There are also many trailing spouses in search for an employment opportunity, graduate foreign students trying to find professional engagement in a foreign country, or those that have simply moved to a new place in search of better work options.

There are several options for expats to get professionally involved - online.  There are many web sites for freelancers, such as oDesk, Elance, Guru, vWorker, GetAFreelancer or Fiverr. Fiverrr enables people to offer their services online. You may choose your category (for example social marketing, writing, programming…) and simply post your offer.

There are so many people out there looking for employment. Competing on the job market is rather demanding, so you may think about upgrading your knowledge and skills. You may start with a new language course, or even return to school. This way you will develop new contacts: with fellow students, teachers, alumni… If you find it too demanding to attend classes on regular basis, why not try some online education programs? You can also choose to get involved in craft courses and learn a completely new skill. It could create an entirely new perspective of your professional capabilities.

Another option is to start a business of your own. Explore the market to see where you could fit in. It can be a web based or a home based business. If you speak a foreign language, you could teach a small group of people even at your home, or you can start a translation business. If you are more craft oriented, why not try making your own jewelry. Regardless of the type of private business, remember that it will go onto your CV, and make you look proactive and initiative oriented.

And the most important issue: don’t neglect yourself. Daily exercise is a great way, not only to stay fit, but also to boost your self esteem and reduce stress. Moreover, socializing with people is another important issue which will make you feel better and, more importantly it will give you a chance to share and receive information. The more people you know, the greater your chances are to hear about some amazing opportunities.

Remember, if you have a job (any job) it will be far easier to find the one that will professionally (financially, personally…) meet your expectations. Accept even part time or volunteer work, as that could be a chance to build a network of contacts which could, in perspective, help you in getting a job you really want. Good luck!
