Walk in the Park (2009) by Marta KissHave you just recently moved to Budapest and are looking for the perfect décor for your new home abroad? Then no need to worry; some of the city’s newest and most talented artists are readily available to embellish your bare walls… but not permanently.

While Move One boasts a highly reputable and reliable fine art shipping service, oftentimes expats on the verge of relocating opt out of shipping their beloved artwork, fearful that it will be damaged in the transportation process. Consequently, many then choose to replace the old with the new by purchasing local and unique pieces, custom to their new location. HangArts, based in Budapest and operated by Julie Van Hemelryck, offers a more affordable solution to having to purchase expensive artwork for your work and/or personal space upon your arrival to Budapest: renting.

Says Van Hemelryck, “HangArts offers rental services. I mostly work with upcoming Hungarian artists and I try to offer the lowest price possible. All rental fees include free delivery and insurance, and, if the client wishes so, HangArts offers free consulting. [We] arrange the pick-up, delivery, and insurance. Companies or individuals can rent photographs or paintings and rotate this on a regular basis.”

HangArts’ impressive gallery consists of well over 100 paintings from nine different artists, as well as approximately 90 photographs and 100 limited prints. All of the artwork available for rent is conveniently cataloged on their website, as there is no brick-and-mortar gallery located in the city.

“I am always looking for more artists,” adds Van Hemelryck. “[We] really want to be flexible with the artists, as we want to create an opportunity for visibility without [tying anyone down.]”

The minimum rental period for an item of artwork from HangArts is one month, after which time the client may decide to continue to rent it, or perhaps return, buy, or exchange it for a fresher piece.

“This is also an innovative way to ‘try before you buy’. Some people see it as a solution to revive their office or living room on a regular basis. It gives a fresh look and new inspiration without breaking the bank.”

HangArts’ flexible nature and accommodating practices allow for several possibilities when decorating your space. For example, any piece of artwork may be withdrawn within a 30-day notice, and the client may buy the artwork if he/she decides to own it after it has been rented.

Pricing is based on the total value of the artwork, with rates starting at just 2,500 HUF per month for two photographs. The monthly rental price for paintings varies greatly, and the total rental fee is determined by the size of the artwork, the rental period, and the number of art pieces being rented at a given time.

According to Márta Kiss, a featured artist for HangArts and a painter since 2003, HangArts poses not only an opportunity to distribute her work, but provides an outlet to the art community within Budapest.

“I hope, through working together with HangArts, that my paintings will get to more people. Budapest is a cultural capital; there is so much going on in the art life, all the time. Any one can find his or her taste.”
