Birthday’s in Budapest

It’s not always easy to bake our children’s birthday cakes. It seems that each of our 3 children end up getting three birthday cakes for each birthday: 1 for our family celebration which is always eaten after their dinner of choice on their actual birthday; 1 for their class at school and 1 for their birthday party. I will admit that I do not bake for all three celebrations. It’s the latter that I buy from a cake shop. The first one is always one that I bake – our kids always ask for my home made angel food cake. For the second one, I always do cupcakes with only a dot of frosting as my kids have reported that even though their American and British classmates love the frosting, most of their other classmates try and eat the cake and avoid the frosting.

For their birthday party, however, the cake usually has to be an ooh and aah in appearance (ie; character matching the birthday party theme) with the taste being less important as the kids never seem to be able to sit down long enough to really eat a slice of cake. The 2 locations where I have ordered great cakes in fun character designs (like King Kong, Dinosaurs, a Princess, etc) are at Frer Cukraszda in my neighborhood of district 2A or Vanilin Cukraszda which has a few locations around town. It’s best to visit the bakery and have a look through their design books. This will also be an easier process involving pointing and less language skill then a phone call or email.

The last cake shop that I absolutely love is Daubner Cukraszda on Szepvolgyi in district 2. In my opinion, this is the best bakery in town and they have fantastic ice cream cakes which are perfect in the hot summer months! Their other baked goods (such as cakes, pogacsas, biscuits, etc) are all excellent. You can tell as their small parking area is always packed and often they have lines out the door around holiday times or in the hot summer months as their ice cream is amazing.

On the topic of ice cream, our other favorite shop is Artigiana Italian Ice Cream on Csaba utca. If you are nearby, you must try it out. Their gelato’s flavors are so strong and fresh often with real chunks of fruit. It’s all made to go with styrofoam containers, too!
