Gluttonous Thursday

kid eatingRestaurants slash prices for annual food fest!

Torkos Csütörtök or Gluttonous Thursday is a traditional Hungarian feast similar in origin to “Mardi Gras” in the U.S. and France and “Shrove Tuesday” in the U.K. and Ireland. In less secular times ‘Lent’ was observed by the majority of Hungarians as a 40-day period of fasting before Easter and Gluttonous Thursday was the designated day of food binging before the period of self deprivation set in.

Although the number of people observing the Lenten sacrifice is probably far less than before, it would seem the foodie celebration of Gluttonous Thursday has never been so big. The event sees a host of restaurants across Budapest offer a 50% discount on their food and drinks menus throughout the day. This year, the feast will be held on February 18th. The official site of the event is menjunkenni.hu and lists all the restaurants taking part in the food fest.  Restaurants fill up quickly, therefore it is recommended to make a reservation!
