Many times we either go out without the intention of having a drink or we have our car because we’d rather not have to drive it all the way home before a mid-week dinner / drinks get together. In Hungary, the drinking and driving tolerance is zero per cent! Many of us moved here from a location where we could at least have a glass or two of wine and still legally drive. Don’t even try it here. Not only is it a zero-tolerance but there are road blocks set up specifically to perform breath tests and pull those, who do not pass, off the road. And, there are more and more serious punishments coming into place. So don’t risk it, be safe and legal by hiring a chauffeur (or Sofor in Hungarian) service to meet you and your car and drive you home safely. This is often an easier and more cost-effective option than returning the next day to pick up your vehicle.

Three of the most popular taxi companies in Budapest offer this service at varying, but comparable prices: City Taxi, Taxi 2000, and Tele5 Taxi.

• For City Taxi, it will run you a basic fee of 2500 HUF and cost you 500 HUF per km. City Taxi can be reached by calling +36 1 211 1111
• Taxi 2000 does not have a basic fee, but the total for the chauffeur has to be above 2500 HUF and each km costs 480 HUF meaning you will need to go a minimum of five km. You can teach Taxi 200 by calling +36 1 200 0000
• Tele5 Taxi, like Taxi 2000, does not have a basic fee, nor do they require a minimum amount. Each km is 690 HUF, however, making it the priciest, but if you’re going a short distance, they might be the best. You can reach Tele5 by calling +36 1 555 5555

If you would rather use a professional chauffeur services, than a taxi company. They offer the most comprehensive insurance and a white glove approach. They run a bit more in their basic cost, due to their full insurance. They also send their first available chauffeur driver, making their wait time much shorter. You can also rent all of the chauffeur services in advance, for long term, or for events.

SOS Chauffeur Service has a basic rate depending on from which district you are leaving and which you are traveling to. Each stop costs you 600 HUF, so this makes it ideal if you carpooled down. Arthur Chauffeur Service, like SOS, has an altering rate dependent on from which district you are traveling. However, their price is a flat rate. It is important to note Arthur Chauffeur only works in advance, so they are ideal for events or day driving, but do not operate on a one-off basis. Non-Stop Chauffeur Service offers excellent pricing at a flat rate. Their district to district is the least expensive and they have a very low rate overall, not exceeding 4800HUF (which might be less than a cab in some areas!).
