Geller Hill Slides

Geller Hill Slides

Winter is only a few months away, so enjoy the nice weather while it lasts; it’s time for some outdoor fun!  Budapest is the ideal expat family posting, as it has so many fun and unique activities to offer.  There are literally dozens of fantastic playgrounds to choose from all over the city.

Favorite playgrounds:

Honved ter (District V)
The Honved playground near the parliament is absolutely impeccable and well kept.  It is guarded and has free toilet facilities.  It is a perfect place to go with the whole family including the dog!  The square features a fenced dog park with dog toys, 5 ping pong tables, a fenced basketball and football court, picnic tables, and a playground which is filled with plenty of fun toys, regular and baby swings, large sandpit, drinking fountain, and lots of benches and trees!  A definite must on a beautiful day!

Gellert Hill (District I)
On the backside of Gellert Hill, facing District XII, is a incredible slide playground with 3 long slides and 2 smaller ones.  This playground is mostly for children over the age of 2 as the slides can be quite intimidating for the younger ones (although a mere 200 meters away, there is a small toddler playground!).  It is a very popular shaded place with lots of fresh air!  The park can be found half way up the hill, easy to find if you follow the sound of children’s laughter!

Margit Island (District XIII)
The children’s playground on Margit Island has new toys and is well kept.  Children of all ages can enjoy this playground, which includes slides, swings, sandpit as well as very original climbing features.  Pack a lunch and enjoy a picnic in many of the large open areas the island has to offer.  While there, don’t forget to visit the petting Zoo on the East side; free entrance!  The petting zoo opens early April and has goats, deer, birds and ponies.  Children can have guided pony rides along a small trail within the small zoo.  The island is a sure bet for the whole family!

Hajogyari Playground

Hajogyari Island (District III)
This playground is great for children of all ages and maybe even a few young at heart parents!  It has been completely renovated and is quite impressive to see.  It features wonderful original toys, amazing massive slides and regular playground toys as well.  It is situated near the entrance of Hajogyari Island (which features a parking lot), north of Margit Island.

Bartfai utca Playground (District XI)
A pirate ship awaits you in this lovely playground within a huge green space. The playground is great for all ages, and has new toys, a portable toilet and is shaded! Bring the entire family for an activity packed afternoon. The main park features great paved trails and spaces perfect for biking, skateboarding or roller-blading, nice open field for kite-flying, basketball court, ping-pong tables and even an indoor gym!

The Buda hills provide lots of green spaces which have been used to create fantastic play areas.  Here are a few favorites:

challenge-land

Challengeland, Csillberc

Challengeland
Nestled in the Buda hills is one of the largest adventure parks in Hungary covering a little over 12,000 m2.  Children from the age of 3 can enjoy Challengeland in all safety as inspectors supervise. The trails are ranked according to difficulty, some are for adults and children over 150cm only, and others are recommended for children under 150 cm.  There are a total of 9 trails and 150 courses; that makes for an action packed day!

Paintball Park
For an even more physical battle, try out a game of paintball at Paintball Park, also situated in Csillebérc.  The territory includes buildings, cars, buses, trees, and plenty of other obstacles. Sure to make any boy feel like Rambo!

Laser Park

Laser Tag
Gather some friends and head over to Laser Park for a great battle! Laser Park is situated in Csillebérc, near Normafa, and is 25,000 m2  filled with shelters, prompting classic war game situations. The laser guns are light weight and, therefore, easy for children to use. For more information, contact Brigitta Hárosi at +36-30-552-1783.

Whatever you do, don’t let cooler rainy days keep you home. There are plenty of fun filled indoor activities too, for children of all ages. Here are a few great places for a rainy day;

Palace of Miracles (District II)
The Palace of Miracles(Csodak Palotaja). is an interactive exhibition/playhouse situated within the Millennium Park behind Mammut shopping center.  Children will find themselves learning all about the world all while playing.  This hands-on science museum features educational and scientific games and experiments as well as interactive puzzles.  A definite must on a gloomy day!

Laser Tag Cave (District II)
The Laser Tag Cave is run by the same people as the Laser Tag in Csillebérc and is situated in Budafok, close to Campona Mall.  The cave is 1500 m2, and provides sound and lighting effects.  Although it is set in a cave, the temperature has been made to a comfortable 15 degrees.  The cave allows for games up to 20 people, so gather your buddies and go for an adventure!

Zoo Funhouse (District XIV)
The Zoo Funhouse is accessible through a small walkway between the Zoo and the Circus.  The Funhouse is a superb indoor playground, complete with a swing, sandpit, bouncy jungle castle, large slide, board games, toys for all ages, dress up costumes, private room for birthday parties, and a café.  Children of all ages love it, and it’s not hard to see why!

Kolyokpark Playhouse (District II)

This huge indoor playhouse is a thrill for kids of all ages, guaranteed to keep them moving for hours!  Parents are welcome to go in and play with their children or simply drop them off and enjoy the restaurants and shops in Mammut Mall.  The playhouse is located in Mammut 2 on the 3rd floor beside the toy store.

Budapest has so much to offer, it is simply impossible to cover it all, as the list just goes on and on!  To see more great playgrounds, playhouses and children activities click here. Now head for some family fun while the gorgeous weather is still around!
