Dealing with Celiac Disease in Budapest
Eating out and shopping for groceries in Budapest while suffering from Celiac’s disease can be quite frustrating. There aren’t as many options as one might be used to. Expat Echo has dug up some valuable information to help with Gluten-Free shopping and dining.

Spar and Kaiser’s shops have just introduced a new Spar brand simply called ‘Free from…’. This new brand offers items that are free from gluten and or dairy. You can find these products near the diabetic and/or bio sections depending of the supermarket.
SPAR Free From offers the following products; Muesli (various flavors), cornflakes, Sauce packs (bolognese, herb, mushroom), crackers, biscuits, pasta (spaghetti, fusilli, penne), all-purpose baking mix, cake batter mix, bread (sliced bread, ciabatta.
Spar and Kaiser’s also carry a few gluten-free frozen foods such as pizza, as well as gluten-free bread crumbs (in the flour section).

Etna Pizzeria, located in Rozsakert shopping center in district II , offers a selection of 32 cm gluten free pizzas for pick up or delivery. Their online menu is hard to read, so here are the gluten-free pizzas (all have a tomato sauce base with mozzarella cheese with …);

- Al Pacino (spinach, ham, eggplant) 2050 huf
- Casanova (4 cheeses – 1 per quarter pizza) 1920 huf

For those in Pest, there is also an Etna II pizzeria which offers more variety and online ordering.
Svábhegyi Vendéglõ, in district XII, also has gluten-free items on offer in their menu. When visiting the restaurant, look for items that are followed by “GLM’ (GLutenMentes = gluten-free). It is recommended to notify the waiter that the meal must be GLM when ordering.

Courtesy of the Hungarian Celiac Association is a small text to be printed out for when at a restaurant. The text explains what Celiac disease and gluten-free meals are. Simply print out the text and hand it over to your next waiter so that he can show it to the chef!
Lisztérzékeny (coeliákiás) vagyok, ezért csak gluténmentes ételeket fogyaszthatok.
Rosszul lehetek minden olyan ételtől, amely búzalisztet, rozst, árpát, vagy ezek származékait tartalmazza – ez a belőlük készült keményítőkre is vonatkozik. Kérem, mondja meg, ha nem biztos abban, hogy ez az étel számomra megengedett.
Olyan ételt ehetek, amelyik rizsből, kukoricából, burgonyából, zöldségből, tojásból, húsból, halból készült és aminek elkészítéséhez nem használtak rántást, zsemlemorzsát vagy glutént tartalmazó szószokat. Ételízesítők közül a Boszorkány ételízesítő és Kotányi fűszerek a megengedettek (kivéve jelenleg: * Olaszos salátaöntet * Panír * Sült oldalas * Húspuhító * Wok fszkv.* Mézes-mustáros csirke* Gombás Pesto fszkv.)
Kérem, szóljon a szakácsnak, hogy a kiválasztott ételt számomra külön edényben és külön olajban készítse el.
Fritőzben sütött burgonyát is csak akkor ehetek, ha az olaj gluténnal nem szennyezett.
