St-Patrick’s Day

On Wednesday March 17th, the Irish celebrate St-Patrick’s Day as well as many across the globe. As early as the 17th century, the Irish have been wearing green ribbons and shamrocks on this day.  It is said that the Saint Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to the pre-Christian Irish, and since then, the shamrock has been the symbol of St-Patrick’s day.

For those who are not familiar with St-Patrick’s Day, here is a little history lesson, even though for many, it is just another reason to party it up with some green beer!

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17, his religious feast day and the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over a thousand years. On St. Patrick’s Day, which falls during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon. Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of meat were waived and people would dance, drink and feast—on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage.

These days, St-Patrick’s Day is celebrated by people from all over the world from as far as Australia to North-America.  Some of the biggest St-Paddy’s Day parades can be found in Canada and the United-States; both countries are home to many with a Irish heritage. Most Irish Pubs across the globe hold St-Paddy’s Bashes, including the ones in Budapest!
