International Schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina

A comprehensive list of international preschools, primary and elementary schools and universities

For expats moving or living abroad with school-aged children it can be a demanding activity to find an appropriate school. When it comes to relocating to Bosnia and Herzegovina assignees should note that the majority of international schools are located in the capital, Sarajevo.

If you have the budget, and a suitable school is available, it is worthwhile enrolling your children in an international school. You will likely be able to find an international school that provides an identical or a highly similar curriculum and school environment as your home country and to which your children are accustomed to. There will always be students in these schools who are from a similar background to your own children, making it much easier for them to make friends and adjust to their new life abroad. If, however, you prefer to immerse your children in the local culture, a local school will be the better choice. There is, of course, the language issue as classes in local schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina are conducted exclusively in the local language.

Please consider this overview of international schools and preschools in Bosnia and Herzegovina:

Preschool education

Montessori Preschool Sarajevo – The pupil-teacher ratio is 1:5 for children below four years and 1:8 for the four and five-year-olds. The program for four and five-year-old children is based on the English National Curriculum. The program provides and opportunity for international children leaving Sarajevo to get into an English school in the year that corresponds to their age.

Subjects are taught in English and Bosnian. English language, mathematics, science, computer literacy and cultural studies are taught in English whilst Bosnian language, art, music and physical training are taught in Bosnian. The curriculum of the International Primary School of Sarajevo integrates the Bosnian Primary School curriculum and an international school curriculum (UK). The International School of Tuzla offers programs for preschool, primary school and college students, and the International Primary School of Zenica also includes a well developed preschool program including activities providing a balance between free-choice and teacher-directed exercises in all the key developmental areas.

All Bosnia Sema Education Institutions offer breakfast and lunch in the school restaurant and also transportation by school buses are available to and from home. There is a doctor’s office and children have regular dental examinations.

QSI International School of Sarajevo is accredited through the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, Pennsylvania, USA. It is a private non-profit institution offering high-quality education in the English language for preschool (three – four year olds), elementary students from five through 13 years of age and a full secondary program for students from 14 to 17 years of age. The curriculum includes English (reading, grammar, composition, phonics, and spelling), mathematics, cultural studies (history, geography, economics, etc.), science, computer literacy, art, music, languages other than English, and physical education as part of the regular program. Meals and bus transportation service are available to students.

Ecole française de Sarajevo, EFS (French School of Sarajevo) was opened in October 1998 by the “Mission laïque française”, a French non-profit association managing a network of French schools all over the world. The EFS is a private French primary school (until the CM-2 class, i.e. up to age 12), which also includes a kindergarten. Teachers are accredited by the French Ministry of Education, while the curriculum taught is that of the French Ministry of Education.

Higher education

The Sarajevo School of Science and Technology (SSST) is a private institution of higher education, offering science and technology-based degree courses. It is unique in that the graduates will have both a local diploma and a degree from the University of Buckingham in the United Kingdom. The SSST opened its doors to undergraduate students in October 2004.

American University in BiH is an undergraduate establishment located in Tuzla. In 2007, the University opened a postgraduate department in Sarajevo, offering a fast track master’s degree in business administration. In 2009, it opened an undergraduate department in Banja Luka. The lecturing staff are mainly former US professionals, as well as some from Europe and Bosnia & Herzegovina.

International University of Sarajevo comprises the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Business and Administration and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. IUS is open to students from all over the world, and the language of instruction and communication is English. Students without English proficiency will attend a one-year intensive English Language Program.

If schooling is a major consideration in your relocation, please inform your Move One representative as soon as possible so that they may investigate current tuition prices and adjust your home search criteria to favor locations close to the most appropriate international school.
