BBC’s box back at home

BBC shipping containerIts 421 day voyage coincided with a turbulent year in world business, and it had circumnavigated the globe twice, but now the BBC box is back in blighty.

The BBC set the box -  a 40 foot (12.19 meters) container – on its journey last year, as an exercise to document global trade. It made its maiden trip carrying whiskey from Scotland to China, and thereafter traveled to Brazil, the United States, Japan and Europe, carrying, among other things, tins of cat food and a shipment of bathroom scales. At each stage of its journey it was tracked online to give people an idea of the globalisation of trade, and how and where their goods get to them.

Now, back at the BBC Television Centre in London, the container bears a few bumps and scrapes. Later on, the crate will be shipped to Africa, where it will be turned into a soup kitchen.
