Superstitious beliefs for expatriates relocating to Azerbaijan

This week we shall be presenting you with a number of beliefs from Azerbaijan, following some interesting ones from Montenegro.

Let’s see what Azeris believe and fear.

  • If a cat crosses your path, prepare for bad luck in business
  • Accidentally-spilled salt precedes an argument, but sprinkling it with sugar will end it
  • Leaving scissors open will bring misfortune or death
  • Meeting a person with an empty bucket means you are destined for misfortune
  • Meeting someone with bread and full bags brings good luck
  • Never rush to a funeral service or cross the funeral train’s path
  • Do not lend money or bread at night
  • Throwing a bowl of water in the wake of a person setting off for a business or lengthy trip brings them luck and a safe return home
  • If the first person you meet on your way to work is male, you will have good luck
  • If someone cuts their nails at night, they will have a bad life
  • If your ear is red and burning, it means somebody is talking about you
  • If somebody steps on your foot, step on their foot in return; otherwise, someone close to you will die
  • If a cutlery falls to the floor, you’ll have guests in your home
  • Whomever leaves food on their plate will have an ugly fiance
  • Don’t leave a book open when you go to bed or you’ll lose your memory
  • If pepper is spilled, there will be a quarrel
  • Don’t start an important job on a Monday
  • A child will die if you rock an empty cradle
  • You shouldn’t have a wedding party in May. May is an empty month
  • You shouldn’t sew your clothes while wearing them, or something bad will happen
