Comprehensive information about medical care services in Croatia

During your stay in Croatia you may require medical assistance – hopefully just for an annual check-up for record keeping. Croatian health care is easily on par with Western standards and scientific methods. The four universities that still exist today provide education for future MDs, dentists and pharmacists , although a significant number of Croatian medical experts now get their education abroad.

The standard of health care in Croatia is generally high, with hospitals and clinics in all larger cities and first aid clinics and pharmacies throughout the country. Most have at least one person on hand who can speak English, and in general many doctors and medical staff in Croatia speak good English. Health care facilities, doctors and hospitals may expect up-front cash payment for medical services. For a visit to the emergency room, the average cost is about 200 HRK, approximately $35,  in cash as credit cards are often not accepted.

EU residents are not billed for medical services, particularly for ‘emergency’ treatment pursuant to treaty. However, for peace of mind, a comprehensive international insurance policy is strongly recommended when traveling to Croatia. Immunization against tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is highly recommended.

Whilst facilities in Croatia are generally of good quality, some public facilities are under severe budgetary strains and certain medicines are in short supply in public hospitals and clinics. Most private pharmacies will be well supplied, though not all medications available in Western Europe are obtainable in Croatia.

The latest dental technology is available in Croatia and dentists are significantly more affordable as compared to other European Union countries. The cost of  treatments is estimated to be around a third of what it is in western countries, and medical tourism is highly developed.
