Central Asia and Eastern Europe have seen an alarming increase in HIV infection rates over the past 10 years. This rank them among the fastest growth areas for the virus in the world. Between 2000 and 2009, the number of reported cases of HIV infection tripled in Central Asia and Eastern Europe, growing from 530,000 cases to 1.4 million.

USAID has always been on the forefront of combating the global AIDS crisis. They invested more than $7 billion in preventative measures. In 2011, with over 33 million people living with or affected by HIV/AIDS world-wide. USAID Afghanistan Health Support

In 2002, Afghanistan is one of the countries with the lowest life expectancy rates. Afghans have limited access to basic health services and few of Afghan women were able to seek healthcare. Today there is a strong collaboration between the Afghan Government, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), other donors and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) has led to significant progress in Afghanistan’s health sector.
