Why Delivering Aid in Darfur Costs So Much: Racing Against Conflict, Terrain, and Time

Why does it cost so much to deliver aid in Africa?
Because the last mile is the hardest—and in places like Darfur, it’s a race against time, terrain, and crisis.

Over 9 million people in Darfur urgently need assistance.
Ongoing conflict, mass displacement, and a harsh rainy season (June–Sept) make logistics incredibly complex.

Roads wash out. Dirt tracks turn to mud. Vehicles get stuck for days.

    Truck speeds drop dramatically:
    • Dry season: 30–40 km/h
    • Rainy season: 10–15 km/h
    • Worst conditions: 5–10 km/h or complete stoppage
Even in the best case, we plan for 100 km per day in rainy season conditions.

Right now, Move One is in the middle of a major humanitarian movement—transporting 330 m3 of temperature-controlled vaccines to help vaccinate over 2.3 million children across Darfur.
This is what it takes to reach the world’s most vulnerable –

Move One staff ,partners and customers continue
    to go where others can’t , won’t or don’t
